Adopt-a-Reader

|Adopt-a-Reader builds leadership skills of parents by offering opportunities to share their knowledge.

Adopt-a-Reader is presented by the Mothers Matter Centre and First Book Canada.

How it Works

The Adopt-a-Reader Campaign provides an opportunity for HIPPY families to “adopt” other parents in their community for a three-week campaign that focuses on parent-child bonding through reading. The mother-to-mother community-centred approach allows the campaign to reach even the most isolated families. Each participating HIPPY family and “adopted” non-HIPPY family is generously provided books from First Book Canada. During the campaign, which is held each spring, families are encouraged to spend approximately 10-15 minutes a day reading with their pre-school aged children. The goal of the Adopt-a-Reader Campaign is to encourage at least 1,000 families (500 HIPPY families and 500 non-HIPPY families) to read a total of 150,000 minutes over 15 days.

2021 Campaign

In February 2021, the Mothers Matter Centre launched its seventh annual Adopt-a-Reader Campaign. We are happy to report this year more than 1,200 families and 14,00 kids joined the campaign. An amazing 3,800 free books were provided by First Book Canada and distributed to 13 HIPPY sites in 5 Provinces and the North West Territories. The campaign concluded with a “Celebration of Reading” event with special guest Ruth Ohi who read her book, Scribble, and demonstrated easy drawing activities that kids can try at home. This year’s virtual event was a huge success filled with love and community connections!
